Outstanding in the Field, Secret Sea Cove, Half Moon Bay

Yesterday, for the second year running, I was lucky enough to attend one of Jim Denevan’s (http://www.jimdenevan.com/ – very cool art) Outstanding In The Field (http://www.outstandinginthefield.com/ events. This year the setting was a beautiful cove just outside of Half Moon Bay, California. I’ve added the menu here so you can appreciate the effort that Jim and his team put into these events. It has to rate as one of the most special dinning experiences anywhere.

* avocado cracker with lime-pickled fennel, sesame & cumin, 2008 Luli Chardonnay (Santa Lucia Highlands)

* grilled ronde de nice zucchini, agretti & focea head lettuce salad with anchovy-caper vinaigrette and bottarga buttered slab bread, 2009 Elizabeth Spencer Sauvignon Blanc Mendocino

* aromatic spiced seafood skewers grilled ‘on the bone’, fava bean & herb salsa verde and fregola stewed with tomato & dried chilies, 2009 Lucy Rose (Santa Lucia Highlands)

* honey-rosemary glazed pork spareribs, caramelized young onions and green garlic fingerling potatoes, 2009 Luli Pinot Noir (Santa Lucia Highlands – hand bottled for this meal)

* orange blossom-scented fromage blanc, bluberries, walnut-poppy seed ‘sand’ cookies.

Firefox 3

Just installed the new Firefox 3 RC1. Very cool. Seems to be very fast and stable. I had an instant and very positive reaction to it – mostly because there has been no visible slow down in the rest of the computer since I opened it (not something I could say about FF2). Well worth a play.

I like the default look and feel too, very clean. Good job guys.

Trackback Nightmare

Further to the DDOS attack turns out that they had managed to create 43,046 trackbacks before it was stopped – so much for Akismet, or is it Typo – actually thats probably a little unfair considering I haven’t updated in a while!!

Anyway its still going on, I’ve just turned them off on the blog and set the server to deny all access to any url containing ‘trackback’. What a pain in the arse these bots / people are.

The product is neat – any image you like form your Flickr account on the back of a business (ish) card, the user experience is brilliant, and the result is pretty high quality – all for $25 for 100. So been away, had a great time, come back to over 1,000 spam trackbacks from porn sites on my blog, really really not good. My apologies to anyone who may have had to wade through that offensive crap to read any of the plugin bits and pieces. I have now disabled trackbacks which should stop it. But, of course prevents anyone genuine from using a great feature of blogging.

Sailin’ Away on a Big Orange Boat

Online Gambling – The Devil’s Pastime

There has been a lot of action in the online gaming sector recently. Company officers arrested, share prices decimated, its been very exciting, if a little inexplicable. Apparently it could actually bring about the end of civilisation as we know it.

Personally, I feel this whole thing is ridiculous. Lets take Partygaming. Most of games they provide are online tournaments. You pay a fixed entry fee to participate in a competitive event. So it seems that if that is immoral and dangerous then any event that accepts money into a prize pool has to be banned too.

So chess, bingo, battle of the bands, the lottery (and you don’t even have to use your brain to compete in that one)!!! Where does it stop. If online gambling goes then all offline has to go to. So no more Ascot, no more raffles, certainly no scratch cards how ridiculous do we want to get – no more guess the number of beans in the jar…..

All of this is about personal responsibility, its no one elses fault or problem. If your kid uses your credit card to gamble online, well thats your fault not the websites. How did they get the info? If you do it, well that would be your fault too then.

Its not like you can get yourself directly in debt on these sites. You can’t play with more than you have credited the account with. So the debt is card credit. Hmmm, well correct me if I’m wrong but a lot more people have issues with credit cards from buying that plasma screen, or that dress, shoes, etc than from playing poker. So lets ban online shopping too.

Or, just maybe, we could get a life and focus on something important, like oh, not melting the planet.
